In the live-action series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon , Usagi actually tries to help people long before she finds out about her past as Princess Serenity or harnesses the power of Sailor Moon.
Usagi creates her own Sailor Guardian costume and calls herself Sailor Rabbit. As a vigilante, she goes up against jewelry thieves. Western Astrology is worked into the mythology of each of the main characters in the Sailor Moon franchise.
Usagi, born on June 30, is a Cancer. She likely falls under this specific star sign because Takeuchi paid attention to ruling planets and celestial bodies when giving birth dates to her characters.
Cancers are ruled by the moon. Those who follow astrology will know that cancers are emotional and insecure at times, but also creative and loyal. Usagi and her future daughter Chibiusa actually share the same star sign - and the exact same birth date. In Sailor Moon , many of the names of the characters have special meanings. In some cases, their names provide a clue about their personality or their planetary affiliation.
She just has a few traits, like being a Big Eater and liking comic books and video games, that make her less ladylike than her friend Naru early on in the series. Girly Run : In Act 1 of Sailor Moon Crystal , Sailor Moon makes her public debut while yelling at Monster of the Week Morga assertively, but then enters the scene with arms upraised and unsteady gait, along with the Slo Mo effect usually reserved for an Unflinching Walk.
It underscores that, while Usagi's heart's in the right place, she's really green at the Magical Girl Warrior thing. While her running in-series improves to match her growing up, the opening to Season 3 falls back to this trope. Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing : With Shingo. She is a ditzy and fun-loving Genki Girl in contrast to her more serious and moody brother.
She also has this relationship with Rei, who has a Hair-Trigger Temper. Goggles Do Something Unusual : Manga only Her mask lets her see disguised enemies and those who are in danger. She doesn't like it though and takes it off until it stops appearing. Go-Go Enslavement : Prince Demande kidnaps Usagi and dresses her in something less revealing than her Sailor Guardian Uniform: — a white flowy dress with gold at the bust.
It still counts, since Demande is trying to make Moon look more like her future self Neo Queen Serenity upon whom he has a very creepy crush and it has a very low cleavage.
In the Silver Millennium, her mother was worshipped as a goddess, and in modern times she is a Physical Goddess. Good Is Not Soft : She's one of the kindest, sweetest and most compassionate people around, but try to harm her friends and her love and you're in for a world of pain. Even more so in the manga, where she is less forgiving of her enemies when she feels they have crossed a line. Green-Eyed Monster : She can be rather moody whenever somebody takes an interest in Mamoru.
Green Rocks : Her crystal seems to gain whatever properties are necessary for a particular arc's plot. It can defeat evil beings, except for when it only seals them away or heals them!
It can grant its user's dying wish, except when using it doesn't cause death! It's useful for saving cities of the future, initiating Transformation Sequences , and also apparently could serve as a great power battery for Big Bads!
It even plays music! Hair Color Spoiler : The princess is revealed to be Usagi Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold : In the anime. Hair-Trigger Temper : Not to Rei's degree, but it doesn't take too much to get her mad. This may be contributed from her hyperactivity. Her Princess Sword could transform into the Princess Harp, which she used for healing magic. Hates Being Alone : Usagi appears to have an inate fear of being alone and losing everyone she ever cares about.
Which isn't so surprising when you consider that, in most continuities, Usagi ends up losing her Guardians and Mamoru to the Dark Kingdom's forces and is forced to fight alone for a while. Part of the reason that Usagi sheds tears for Nehellenia in the 90's anime and even almost allows Nehellenia to kill her is because she admits she wouldn't be able to handle the idea of spending an eternity alone like Nehellenia did.
Healing Hands : Can heal others with her Moon Healing Escalation, though she needs her crystal or wand to do it. The Heart : She's the female centerpiece of the series and the glue that holds everyone together.
Especially emphasized in the live-action series, in which a group of four loners Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako all become true friends through Usagi's love and affection.
Sailor Moon R: The Movie also emphasizes that all of the sailor senshi, Mamoru, and even the villain would have been lonely and friendless without Usagi. Heart Beat-Down : Many of her attacks involve love and hearts; one attack even consists of blasting enemies in the face with a gigantic glass heart. This trait would pass down to Chibi-Usa.
Heart Light : Her final form consists of her having wings and a Glowing lotus symbol on her chest. Held Gaze : After sniping at each other without really meeting eyes, Usagi pulls her test paper away from her face to further chastise Mamoru for mocking her low score, only to gasp as they both stare open mouthed, the scene turns mutually Gaussian and Love Bubbles appear.
Usagi breaks the gaze and makes an awkward retreat, acutely aware that she finds the nameless boy attractive. Henshin Hero : One of the best-known Magical Girl -based examples of the trope. Hereditary Hairstyle : Queen Serenity, her mother in her past incarnation, has Usagi's exact hairstyle.
Her daughter has a very similar hairstyle too. Heroes' Frontier Step : She is introduced as a clumsy slacker, but reveals her kind nature by saving Luna from being tormented by a group of children. In the live action series Princess Sailor Moon has a sword. Heroic BSoD : Usagi hits this pretty hard in the first season. The first time is when she's slammed with a rapid fire set of information — that annoying Mamoru's her love interest Tuxedo Kamen, she's the long-lost Moon Princess Princess Serenity, they got the Silver Crystal and She starts crying that she doesn't want to do this anymore and just be a normal girl, even willing to just go ahead and fork over the Crystal before a desperate Rei has to slap some sense into her.
She does it again in the finale as the girls drop like flies, ultimately leading to her wishing that she could be a normal girl after finishing off Beryl. Usagi has another one at the final arc of Stars.
She watches her best friends and guardians die in one fell swoop, Rei dying in her arms. While she's still reeling from that, she looks up and sees that her love, Mamoru, had his Star Seed removed a long time ago, and she had no idea that he'd been attacked and dead all season long.
To say that she's having a rough day is putting it mildly. And that's not even the end of her bad day. Heroic Self-Deprecation : Highlighted in the third season of the anime, when Haruka and Michiru begin hurling this at Usagi.
Heroic Willpower : When the chips are really down, she can show this — until then, she's a bit limp. An example is her fight against Rubeus in the '90s anime, where she stands up under super-enhanced gravity using nothing but determination. The Heroine : The one and only Sailor Moon. Hidden Depths : She's not as stupid as she appears at first, and is quite good with people's feelings — notably, she's the only one who saw through Minako's happy act.
Holding Hands : In Usagi's second recurring dream of a romance between a prince and princess, her view of the dream princess changes to a first-person perspective, in which she sees herself running while holding tight to the sword-wielding prince. Holy Hand Grenade : A lot of her attacks are a blast of pure light of love and justice, yet she's usually the one who vaporizes the Monster of the Week.
Honor Before Reason : She fights for what she feels is right, namely love and justice, even if she doesn't always think things through. Hopeless with Tech : Usagi has trouble using a computer early on in both the manga and the first anime.
This was justified back in the early 90's, when the series originally began, because personal computers were new technology that Usagi and everyone else were still learning to use. But in Crystal which is set in The New '10s , it's absolutely comical, as Usagi airheaded though she might be is a teenage girl who like her peers, and like much of the audience has been around technology all her life. Hot-Blooded : She's a Nice Girl , but she often can be quite moody, overemotional and temperamental, especially when it comes to Mamoru.
How Do I Shot Web? Hypocrite : She can be a Clingy Jealous Girl towards Mamoru and hates when other women get close to him, but she is not always faithful herself from the way she stares at other boys. This is mostly in the first anime.
In one episode, she slaps Mamoru over forgetting her birthday despite the fact that she never told him, but she doesn't know his birthday either. Idiot Hero : A rare female example, being depicted as Book Dumb and a bit of a Cloudcuckoolander at times, but especially in the early series since she matures and becomes a true hero later on. She isn't quite so bad in the manga though, the original anime tended to exaggerate many characters.
As the series progresses, she begins to take more pride in her role as a Guardian. The reasons do change as the series progresses. At first, she just doesn't want to have to put herself in danger her crybaby persona. As the series progresses, though, her resentment comes because of what the responsibility of being Sailor Moon has done to her and those around her sort of like a Magical Girl version of Spider-Man.
Her brooch is worn in the middle of her chest bow, and she wore a mask that disappeared after Act When she gains Moon Cosmic Power, Make Up , her choker becomes red with a yellow heart at the center. As Super Sailor Moon, her uniform underwent many changes; her earrings are now singular crescent moons affixed to her ears, her choker is yellow with a pink heart in the center, the stripes on her collar change from white to golden, and her shoulder pads are white, translucent, and more wing-like in shape.
Her back waist bow becomes white, long, translucent, and billowy. Her collar is blue in the front and yellow in the back, the colors blending into each other over her shoulders. Her skirt is now white with a blue and yellow border at the bottom; the colors blend into each other similar to how they do on her collar. The red gem on her tiara is replaced with a gold crescent moon, a puffy golden belt sits above her usual white belt, and a second Cosmic Heart Compact is attached to the center of her belt.
When Usagi became Eternal Sailor Moon, her uniform underwent the most radical changes; she no longer wears a tiara and instead has a golden crescent moon on her forehead, her leotard no longer has chest armor, her earrings have a golden star attached beneath each crescent moon, and her choker is red and v-shaped with a pink heart at the center and a golden crescent moon beneath it. The collar itself is like her original one, but it is a darker shade of blue with three golden stripes.
In the place of her shoulder pads are pink bubble-like sleeves with two red fittings at the ends; they have somewhat of a translucent aspect to them. In the area where her chest bow was located is a pair of white angel wings with a pink heart that has a golden crescent moon attached to it sitting at its center.
Her gloves now have red, v-shaped wristbands with golden crescent moons on them, the fittings at the ends of the gloves have feather barrettes attached to them similar to the ones in her hair, and the gloves themselves are now extended to reach up to her upper arms. Her belt is now comprised of two ribbons the one on top is yellow and the one beneath it is red clipped together by a golden crescent moon; the bottom ribbon extends past her skirt, mimicking the flowing effect that her previous back bow had.
Her back bow is replaced with a set of large white angel wings, her skirt is now composed of three layers the top layer is yellow, the middle layer is red, the bottom layer is blue , and her boots are now white and knee-length with a slightly larger heel and red v-shaped borders that have golden crescent moons on them.
Main Page: Princess Serenity. Main Page: Neo-Queen Serenity. In the beginning, Usagi is seen to be a cheerful, immature girl. She cries easily and is often overtaken with emotion. She also displays an unwavering hope and sees good in her enemies that others may not. Usagi and Ami then continue to fight the Dark Kingdom's minions.
Then, Usagi meets Rei Hino , a teenage shrine priestess who went to a private school. Like Ami, she was a Sailor Senshi. They began hanging out together and Rei joins Ami and Usagi as they continued to fight against the Dark Kingdom. Sometimes, Usagi would argue with Rei. The arguments would center around Usagi's laid-back attitude towards responsibilities or the rivalry of Tuxedo Mask's affection. One day, Usagi was running late for school when she accidentally ran into a group of guys who began to pick on her.
She was rescued by a new transfer student, Makoto Kino. While other students avoided Makoto, due to her history of violence in her previous school, Usagi kindly introduced herself, and Makoto shared her food with her. Shortly after being introduced to Sailor Venus, Usagi is once again confronted by Mamoru. He apologizes to her for all the times he made fun of her. Seeing that he was injured, Usagi becomes concerned and follows him into a Dark Kingdom trap.
Usagi was forced to transform into Sailor Moon to save her and Mamoru's life; who then revealed himself to be Tuxedo Mask. After he was seriously injured in a sneak-attack by Zoisite , Sailor Moon gained the Legendary Silver Crystal and was revealed to be Princess Serenity. Tuxedo Mask was then kidnapped by the Dark Kingdom and Usagi fell into a depressed state; worrying about him. Once he was revealed to be alive but under the control of the Dark Kingdom, Usagi gained back her determination to save him.
On their way across the tundra, one by one Usagi's friends were forced to sacrifice themselves to help her reach the base. After finally arriving at the Dark Kingdom headquarters, she had to fight against Mamoru, who was still under the enemy's control. Eventually, Usagi was able to break the hold over him, only to have him die in her arms when he was protecting her.
In the final battle, she faced off against the leader of the Dark Kingdom; using up all her strength and destroying it. She collapsed and the blast spread throughout the entire area, consuming everyone. The next morning, Usagi woke up in bed, rushing to school with no memory of her time as Sailor Moon. The other Sailor Senshi and Mamoru are alive as well and also have lost their memories about their powers.
During this story arc, two aliens arrive on Earth from a mysterious tree , which provides them with sap they need to stay alive. However, it must be fed energy, and the two eventually decide to steal energy from humans. Luna is forced to reawaken Usagi as Sailor Moon to stop an attacking Cardian. Sailor Moon eventually loses the ability to use Moon Tiara Action, as her tiara stops spinning mid-attack. During the story arc, Usagi's brooch is destroyed by a Cardian, and she de-transforms; eventually she realizes this is because her resolve to fight was weakened by her desire to be normal which also caused her tiara to no longer function.
She encounters Queen Serenity, who repairs her brooch, transforming it into a new one. She also acquires a new transformation phrase, and gains a new attack , which she uses for the rest of R to defeat enemies. Usagi is also frequently saved by a mysterious hero resembling Tuxedo Mask, known as the Moonlight Knight. Throughout the series, Ail develops a crush on Usagi, although his feelings are unreciprocated.
Usagi continues trying to become closer to Mamoru through the arc and help his memories return. Usagi is eventually able to teach Ail and An the value of true love after showing her devotion to protecting Mamoru multiple times from the Makai Tree's vicious assaults, and his reciprocal efforts to protect her in turn.
Mamoru realizes he loves Usagi, and it's revealed that the Moonlight Knight was a psychic projection of Mamoru born out of a desire to protect Sailor Moon. As he has now rediscovered his feelings for her, the Moonlight Knight rejoins his body, causing him to once again consciously fall in love with Usagi. Ail and An leave Earth to start anew with the sapling Makai Tree on a peaceful planet, ending the story arc.
After Mamoru regained his memories, he and Usagi began dating. One of their dates was interrupted by a little girl, Chibiusa , who was searching for the Silver Crystal. Along with her, a new enemy appeared, the Black Moon Clan, who were searching for Chibiusa. Usagi made a vow to protect Chibiusa following their attempts to track her down. Shortly after their arrival, Mamoru began having visions of Usagi in danger in the future, and broke up with her to avoid causing her pain or death, but left Usagi heartbroken.
While fighting the Black Moon Clan, Usagi and the Inner Senshi learned Chibiusa was from the future and needed help to awaken her mother from a deep slumber.
