The movie takes place after the end of the original anime series and is that timeline's proper canonical close. It deals with Edward Elric 's fallout after sacrificing his body and soul to save his brother, Alphonse, with his penance involving being taken to a parallel world governed by science instead of alchemy.
Edward fights desperately to find a way back home from a parallel Earth -- where he finds himself in s Germany -- encountering people who heavily resemble those from his past. Meanwhile, Alphonse continues trying to bring his brother back while the post-World War I German society grows incredibly restless in the wake of their defeat in the other world.
This causes the Thule Society to seek out arcane means to empower their fallen nation once again. The film was well-received upon its original release, namely, feeling like a satisfactory and worthy ending to the anime series.

I remember this movie was widely criticized back then: The fans of the original manga which disliked the plot changes of the original "Full Metal Alchemist" anime considered this movie made the ending even "worse", and those who liked the ending of the original television series considered this movie "ruined" a perfectly satisfying conclusion.
I personally liked a lot the final episodes of the original Full Metal Alchemist show, to the point I prefer it to the super-happy conclusion of "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood", but I liked this movie too. It's a BUY Read full review. I'd highly recommend this to other anime fans, but only if they had watched the first section of the Fullmetal series. Fullmetal alchemist is one of the more massive stories in the anime world, it includes many games which were most popular in the playstation2's era, soundtracks, manga, fan-fictions, cosplay, it's everywhere! Brotherhood is based more on the gigantic manga series, and i prefer Brotherhood over the classic, if i had to choose of coarse.
FUNimation has also come out with a new movie just this year, which I'm going to buy once it's available on DVD- i was greatly unamused with how far the closest theater to show then new movie was, i couldn't make it. The reason why I decided to buy this movie was because I did not like the ending to the Fullmetal Alchemist series. I thought that this movie would compensate for the bad ending of the series. I decided I was wrong after watching the movie because Ed and Al were moved to the other side of the gate Without their powers of Alchemy.
They were also seperated from their friends in the world of Alchemy and would never be able to see them again. The other reason why I did not care for this movie was because many people that the viewer finds to like such as hoenheim of light and wrath die. And finally after the series built up the relationships of the characters with each other such as that of Roy mustang and the state alchemists to Ed and Al and Winreys relationship with the brothers everyone is split up from each other.
This is why I found this movie to be unsatisfactory. Only if you are a true Fullmetal Alchemist fan would I reccomend this movie. All in all I would prefer the ending to the series more then this ending. There was a problem retrieving your scheduled recordings.
