What makes crayfish unique

The head and claws are removed last Once the shell is removed, crayfish are very soft and will hide until they have expanded into their new shell and the shell has hardened. It is advisable to leave the old shell in the tank as the crayfish will eat it as a source of calcium. Adding a small amount of calcium carbonate to the water will help make a stronger shell.

Crayfish are principally vegetarian and will survive well on a diet of waterweed and almost any thinly cut vegetables such as pumpkin, potato, celery including leaves , and apples and other fruits. You can also give them small amounts of meat or fish but it is not necessary. The important point to remember is not to overfeed crayfish. Crayfish only have a small stomach and will stop eating when full, leaving the remainder of the food.

They do not need to be fed every day. A good feeding schedule would be one to two small pieces of food every two to three days. Remember to remove any left-over food after two hours.

The Australian Museum respects and acknowledges the Gadigal people as the First Peoples and Traditional Custodians of the land and waterways on which the Museum stands.

What are Crayfish? The Yabby The yabby Cherax destructor has the largest range of all Australian crayfish. Other Crayfish The second most widely distributed genus is Euastacus. Crayfish Habits Crayfish, can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, dams, lakes and swamps. Keeping Crayfish Crayfish make interesting and industrious pets and can be purchased from most pet shops. Points to Consider When Setting up your Aquarium Keep the water clean by changing it regularly every two to three months and use the recommended water conditioners each time the water is changed.

Do not allow uneaten food to stay in the aquarium for more than a couple of hours, as it will quickly turn the water bad. Use a good quality aerator and filter.

Crayfish will shed their exoskeletons so that they can grow a new one when they increase in size. In the first year of their life, they molt six to ten times! You might not imagine so, but crayfish actually have brilliant eyesight. Their eyes can move independently from one another and are referred to as compound eyes.

This means their eyes are made up of repeating units called the ommatidia, which each function as their own individual visual receptor. They walk forwards; the only time crayfish move backwards is when they swim.

They achieve this backwards motion while swimming by utilising their abdomen movements. Crayfish sperm is known to be very unique. This is because their sperm have no tails flagella. Instead, they look like something similar to amoeba and actually crawl towards the eggs. The largest known crayfish is the Astacopsis gouldi from Tasmania. Crayfish mate in the autumn and lay eggs in the spring.

The larvae remain on the mother for several weeks. They are eaten by many species of animals including raccoons , red foxes , muskrats , northern water snakes, eastern painted turtles, and many types of birds. Crayfish are eaten all over the world. Like other edible crustaceans, only a small portion of the body of a crayfish is edible. Crayfish are kept as pets in freshwater aquariums, typically with bluegill or bass, rather than goldfish or tropical or subtropical fish.

Crayfish are closely related to lobsters , crabs , and shrimp. It is believed that they use chimney positions or chemicals as landmarks when dispersing between water bodies throughout the landscape.

We still do not know the function of the bottlebrush crayfish unique dense clumps of long setae along the entire length of antennae! The Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish, Astacopsis gouldi , is the largest freshwater invertebrate in the world, and can grow up to 31". The lives of crayfishes consist of a continuous process of shedding, or molting, their old exoskeleton, and growing and hardening the new exoskeleton Figure 1.

In the days leading up to molting, crayfishes begin to break down the calcium salts in their exoskeleton and store a small amount of them in small whitish dislike structures called gastroliths. These structures will provide the important initial source of calcium used to harden the new exoskeleton. During the molting process, crayfishes are very vulnerable to predation because they are soft and unable to move effectively: they find refuge under rocks, in woody debris, or in burrows.

It is estimated that most Kentucky crayfishes live from two to three years. There are over 50 species of crayfish known from Kentucky's streams, lakes, caves, wetlands, and other freshwater habitats. Many of them are rarely encountered by humans, and most are similar in their overall appearance.
