Hyperventilation results in increased loss of carbon dioxide from the lungs, resulting in a fall in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in arterial blood PaCO 2. As a result, phosphate is redistributed into the intracellular space thus reducing extracellular phosphate concentration and causing hypophosphataemia.
